Aztec RV Resort Is A Hidden Gem Of Upscale Motorcoach Resorts

Until just a week before my first visit, I wasn’t even aware the Aztec RV Resort existed. Considering it’s located near Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and only an hour drive from my home, I was wondering why the forums I frequent weren’t discussing this gated Class A motorcoach community. It only took one visit to understand why…

A video tour of this resort appears is located at the end of this story.

It seems the answer is because approximately 85% of the seasonal residents of this luxury resort, escape the cold Canada climate for the Winter and flock to this hidden gem that consists of lush landscaping and an an abundance of recreational amenities. Because of this, the dominant language within the gates is French and simply stated, that could be the reason I’m not reading too much information posted on American based RV websites…at least not on the ones I frequent. But that changes now and here’s an overview of this resort based on a two-day, one night stay at the Aztec RV Resort.

It’s human nature that birds of a feather flock together with those who share the same interests and culture. While this resort is owned, operated and the majority of spaces are occupied by French Canadians, one factor that everyone within these gates share is their passion for adventure and traveling by luxury motorcoach. I’m sure their desire to live in pleasant climate is also a major “smile” factor and the weather during my stay did not disappoint. Allow me to state upfront the seasonal residents I met could not have been more hospitable. I may never know if the reason they were so kind was due to my sparkling personality or because I was driving a fully restored 1957 Flxible Starliner! Another reason could be that during my January 2017 stay, while much of the country is plowing snow off driveways, the Aztec residents were enjoying the best weather in the USA! Not a heavy Winter coat was in sight.

When speaking to the management during my January 2017 visit I learned that being a French Canadian is far from being a requirement as they welcome with open arms anyone with a fairly recent well maintained Class A Motorhome. Specifically the rules state, “All RV’s must be Class A recreational vehicles and not more than 15 years old and be clean and in good repair (free of rust or black streak stains) and fully self-contained with permanent toilet, bathing and galley facilities.” Needless to say, my vintage bus required approval and the management responded swiftly and enthusiastically.

The Aztec RV Resort is comprised of 645 individual properties with the majority of the lots individually owned. Compared to many RV parks, lots are generously oversized and available for short or long term rental. Various developer and individual lots are currently listed for sale.

I’ll add that unlike some planned RV communities that can have a cookie cutter feel, quite of few of the Aztec lots feature an interesting level of detail and indoor/outdoor area improvements. An expansion area is currently under development that will add ten new lots.

Every lot is a bit different in shape, size and level of improvements and brings a unique personality to the resort. Some lots feature open areas while others are adorned with well designed outdoor living areas as well as indoor bedrooms or (not so) tiny house configurations.

The average lot is sized in the 4,000 square foot range with larger lots sized 6,000 square feet. Of course, being a managed community all improvements have a planning and approval process. The improved lots I toured seemed to be well designed to take full advantage of South Florida’s indoor/outdoor lifestyle.

During my January visit, while much of the USA and surely all of Canada were experiencing severe Winter weather conditions, the residents of Aztec were enjoying temperatures reaching the 80’s with humidity at low levels. For my visit I arrived on a Thursday which by pure coincidence happened to be the one night of the week they offer Aztec’s version of a happy hour…one that lasted five hours and included a buffet dinner, pay per drink bar and live music and dancing on it’s large tiki hut motif dance floor in it’s expansive indoor/outdoor clubhouse.

As stated, French is the dominate language in this resort but the management and many of the residents are bilingual, so there were no communication issues during my stay. This gave the resort an international flair and a personality unique to South Florida.

Surroundings

This is the most difficult portion of the review to describe, so I’ll include photos to assist in telling the story. First and foremost, the resort is clean and almost Disney-esq in environment. The roadways are smooth and ample width for the largest of motorcoaches. The landscape is mature and there’s no shortage of manicured hedges and palm trees line the streets.

At night the streets are lit just well enough that a night time Dog walk was a pleasurable and safe experience. One of my pet peeves in RV resorts is the sometimes hidden lot number markings and difficult to read street signs. The Aztec RV Resort passed the test. All lots and street signs are clearly marked and navigating the property is a simple task. It shows the concentric circle development layout was well planned from the beginning. This is a good thing for guests who are attempting to locate your lot or for those of us who are in for a brief visit.

Since this is such a large resort community, there’s no shortage of golf carts used for transportation…some of which were eye catching with much thought put into the design. Parking for the golf carts at the clubhouse area as well as for guests is more than ample.

Location

The Aztec RV Resort is conveniently located to both I-95 and the Florida Turnpike. Margate, FL is located just West of Pompano Beach and within a half hour drive of Ft. Lauderdale and Boca Raton. I drove to the resort using the Turnpike route and arrived at the resort within 15 minutes of exiting. There’s no encumbrances on the route, but some of the arteries can have a level of traffic depending on the time of day. Ingress and egress to the resort was well thought out and easy to maneuver. The community is gated and guarded after 6pm.

Pricing

During my stay I paid $100 (including all utilities) for a one night stay in a lot that was located directly across from the clubhouse that included a tiki hut and basic patio furniture. Currently (January 2017) a special is in place that prices annual rentals at $4,000 to $6,000 per year plus electricity and, if needed, Comcast cable and internet services are available.

Currently available lot sales/resales range from $140,000 to $500,000. While that last number may give you sticker shock, it’s not your typical RV campground lot. Here’s a few photos of two lots on the upper scale of the price range:

The Bottom Line

This upscale RV resort is not for everyone and caters to those who are looking for a laundry list of amenities within a secure, gated community environment. As stated, French is the dominate language in this community, but all are welcomed. While the short term rentals are on the higher priced side of the rental market, the annual rental fees are more than competitive to other other comparable luxury resorts. I will look forward to a return visit and hopefully for a much longer stay.
